Yoga for Back Pain

Once I was in a meeting and a person who used to watch my daily yoga TV show called me-

“Namaste Guru, I am Rama and I watch your TV show and practice yoga every day. My back used to have pain before and now the pain has disappeared so I thank you very much. I really like the way you teach yoga, it is very simple and good. I am also very happy to talk to you.”

I receive a lot of such calls informing me that their back pain has vanished and some inquiring about what to do regarding back pain and issues related to nerves. I would like to share my experience on issues related to back pain, please kindly share with others and encourage me if you like this article.

Today, back pain has become one of the common ailments that most of us are facing. People who suffer from it are aware of the pain. Due to the pain, we tend to believe what people say and take medicines, but according to me, this is not good.

The first thing we need to understand is the causes of back pain. There are numerous causes, ranging from poor lifestyle to serious conditions such as scoliosis or spondylitis. Back pain can also be related to muscles, the spinal cord, and nerves. Back pain is common among students, professionals, and housewives due to sitting and working posture while working or studying. There are four natural curves in our spine that help in shock absorption and load-bearing. When you deviate from those curves due to bad posture, bad sleeping habits, etc. your muscles try to get the spine back to those natural curves. Strong and regular stress on the spine causes back pain.

In my experience there are some simple yoga postures that will help to solve back problems:

A key back Asana: This is usually caused by working on a laptop for a long time, reading a book, or looking at the phone for a long time. It happens around the upper back and tightens the muscles and neck. This stiffness can cause pain. The most effective for upper back muscle pain is downward dog posture also known as Adho Mukha Svanasana.

Masturbation also helps to reduce the tension in the upper back.

Bhujangasana: Exaggerated lumbar curve. This, along with weak lower back muscles can cause severe lower back pain. An exaggerated lower back curve is more common in women, especially during and after pregnancy. This pain can be alleviated with some lower back stretches like Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), Sphinx Pose, and Reclined Pigeon Pose. Some of the pose that relaxes the lower back are the children’s pose, and the reclined spinal twist.

Boat Asana: Finally, one of the most important things to do is to strengthen the back. Your back pain can be caused by weak back muscles. Some of the postures for strengthening the back and core muscles are Navasana, Vashishtasana, Shalabhasana, and Setubandhasana.
